Prostitution in Thailand is supposedly illegal, but there are no legal consequences for prostitution. The government decided to regulate the prostitution instead. They regulate that the brothel houses must use condoms. Condoms aren't 100% effective. Yes, they can high percentage efficiency when used correctly, but the government can't really regulate if they are using them correctly. There is also a chance of the condom breaking. It seems that might be a good idea just to regulate prostitution in brothel houses than to prohibit it, but the risk increases with the more people that visit the brothel houses. If just one person was to get an STI from there, that person could spread it to someone else who does not work at the brothel house, in which there are no regulations on using condoms outside prostitution. The fact that the prostitutes are sleeping with many people is still very risky.

Handing out condoms was a very good idea. By handing them out, it starts to allow people to be more open about sex. The people of Thailand can actaully talk about be sexually active and there is not a stigma that goes with being sexually active. I think this had the biggest impact of bringing down the rate of STI's and STD's. It's allowing them to practice safer sex.

  1. I do agree with you that condom use is a very good idea.

From my point of view, it is kind of odd that the government is controlling prostitution rather than making it fully illegal and banned. I wonder, is prostitution in Thailand attracting more tourist to go there? Do Thai governments make money off from prostitutes/ brothel houses that gains the country income?

Even though the Thai government has made prostitution illegal, the practice of prostitution is still in use with the mandatory use of condoms. I wonder what is the government's real motive.
